    Why Walking?

Currently in this country, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the single biggest killer, with around 275,000 deaths per year - nearly 40% (2 in 5) due to not doing enough activity. Most people, when asked why they don't do enough physical activity, say that cost and a lack of time and facilities are the main reasons.

Walking is free, can be built into everyday activities such as shopping, taking the children to school, going to work, etc., so therefore it doesn't need to take any extra time, and can be done from your own doorstep and thus doesn't need any special facilities.

When done as a moderate activity, walking has been shown to help prevent CVD, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, to lower blood pressure and the risk of falls, and to increase the strength of leg muscles, joints, and the heart and lungs. It can also help to lose weight and gain confidence.

Due to the fact that walking using the Walkzone guidelines is designed to provide you with an exercise opportunity, it is advisable that you confirm your suitability to walk with your GP if you have any doubts or are unsure about a medical condition you may be suffering with. Note, walking is classed as a moderate activity so occassions where people are unable to do it are rare or are due to unstable or extreme medical conditions.
